Be a Thermostat

As leaders in business, church, family, community or anywhere you need people to follow you, practice being a thermostat, not a thermometer.

A thermometer just repeats the temperature in the room that has already been set.  A thermometer is ineffective as a leadership tool. 

A thermostat sets the temperature of the room.  That is the skill leaders need.  If the team is running hot, you should cool them down by setting your message, attitude and demeanor cooler.  If the team needs to heat up, adjust yourself to that temperature and as a thermostat, the room will follow. 

Recently a leader in a very large organization that we worked with says “when do we panic?”  My response was, “we don’t.  As a leader, your panic becomes the teams’ panic.”

Take the thermostat approach and use that as a tool to put your team, company or followers in the mindset needed for the environment they are in. 

The alternative is being a thermometer and missing an opportunity to lead.
